How to Create Simple Bulleted Lists - bbCode Basics

Note: If this lesson seems a bit unclear to you, you may want to check basic bbCode lessons: How Does bbCode Work? & How to Correctly Insert Tags.

Let's talk about making lists in forums posts using bbCode, lists can be ordered or unordered, in this lesson will talk about the simplest kind: unordered or bulleted lists.

They are simple because they don't require an option, but only two tags:

The [list] tag: Wraps the entire list & doing that designates its limits.

The [*] tag: Inserted on the left of each item in the list. I have to specify that unlike other tags, this one has not an ending part & doesn't wrap the element or item.

Example:

[list]
[*]List item.
[*]Another list item.
[*]And another one.
[/list]

Result in your final message:
  • List item.
  • Another list item.
  • And another one.

As a final note, I want to add that in some kinds of forums, you could simply type the elements you want to add to a list, each one in a line, select them all, click on a button in a provided bbCode Editor & all the tags are inserted automatically, rest then simply to publish your post.

But what if an element in the list was composed of 2 or more lines?

In this case you have two options:
  1. To insert the tags manually (a [*] before any item starts).
  2. To use the editor then modify it to fit the result needed.
Example of elements going on several lines:

[list]
[*]List item, 1st line.
2nd line.
[*]Another list item.
[*]And another one, 1st line.
2nd line.
3rd line.
[/list]

Result:
  • List item, 1st line.
    2nd line.
  • Another list item.
  • And another one, 1st line.
    2nd line.
    3rd line.
Second lesson: Advanced Ordered Lists Posting.
